At the beginning of the eighties, Einstürzende Neubauten held on to the rubble and debris offered to them by western Berlin, tracing a path of rusty reflections that connects Dadaism to industrial rock, opening the gates to a secret history of popular music. They were born from a destructive racket, but over four decades have learnt to appreciate the seductive contours of silence, rising up as a beacon of avant-garde in perpetual motion that convinces us that a sheet of metal can be an instrument that is just as versatile, if not more, than an electric guitar, and that Blixa Bargeld’s recited lyrics and superhuman shrieks are the voice of an old continent that is always on the brink of collapse.
