Quilapayún is the most committed and political expression of music in Chile, with a significant body of work concentrated in the 1960s and 1970s. The group was the greatest emblem of the Nueva Canción Chilena, the most identified with the Unidad Popular government, and its repertoire was the one that best represented, before and after the military coup, the country's political left.
For Quilapayún, 1973 meant the beginning of exile. Sent by Salvador Allende as a cultural embassy of Chile at the time, their mission was to tour several European countries in order to show what was really happening in the country. The military coup prevented their return and forced the group to take refuge in France, from where they organised their artistic activity during all the years of exile.
With more than 500 songs recorded, 40 albums, and thousands of performances in concerts, radio and television, Quilapayún is today one of the classics of Latin American music. Spokesman of a history and exponent of a culture, Quilapayún is a song in which poetry and music are protagonists, while at the same time they display a commitment to peace, solidarity and democracy.
