Stephin Merritt has spent most of his life transforming the very stuff of existence, with its epic peaks and bland valleys, into pure pop. Danceable, chamber, noisy ... whatever you want. There is no melodic declension that falls outside The Magnetic Fields style book.
But the genius of Merritt and his people turn each new sidestep into a distant style exercise, but into an emotional milestone; a chapter in the biography of its authors, and in that of the legion of followers that continue to grow with them.
