Yuri Buenaventura

In 1986, when he triumphed in France with his version of 'Ne me quitte pas', Yuri Buenaventura became a salsa celebrity. Not in vain, that success opened the doors to a renewed interest in Latin music. 

Buenaventura has always defended the roots of this genre that combines the best of the Antillean tradition and that had the city of skyscrapers as its epicenter. "Salsa from New York has not changed and Yuri Buenaventura comes from there, from that angular and sensual, romantic and combative music; from the historic albums of the Fania All Stars," says the promotional sheet of this artist born in Colombia; and continues: "To talk about the origin of this music is to talk about the Spaniards who left their country to seek a new life and got lost in the jungle, among mosquitoes and snakes; of the Africans who were thrown onto ships and whipped to work; and of the Amerindians attacked by absolute evil with its cross, which massacred them because they believed in the gods of the river and the sun; and then, another tragedy: that of the exodus of Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans, who left their island under the sun to go to the winter of the poor neighborhoods of New York; well, New York salsa is that music," and Buenaventura is one of its greatest representatives, we add, as well as one of the high points of Mas i Mas'25.
