PIÑATA PRESENTA: PORTICO QUARTET

Defining the music of Portico Quartet is a goal doomed to failure. It is better to feel it. To enjoy it without intellectual alibis. Because theirs is such a shifting formula, so indefinable, so stylistically blurred, that we can mention the names of Phillip Glass, Boards of Canada, Steve Reich or Ryuichi Sakamoto as reasonable shadows, but we would surely not be painting the whole picture. Something about them would be left out of focus.

Hailing from Southampton and Cambridge, but based in London almost two decades ago, Duncan Bellamy, Jack Wyllie, Milo Fitzpatrick and Keir Vine made their name with an approach that featured the rhythmic power of the hang, an oval metal percussion instrument shaped like a flying cymbal, which was their trademark.

Since then, their indefinable mix of ambient, jazz, electronica and minimalism has been released on labels such as Real World, Ninja Tune and Godwana, where they have released their eight albums to date. All of them radiate cinematic and scenic qualities that take on an extra dimension live.

On 28 April they return to La (2) de Apolo, this time to present "Monument", their latest album and the one that shows the band at their most direct, aerodynamic and rhythmic.
